Travel: Bushwalking in Australia
My most recent trip was in June of 1996 and I had the opportunity to do some bushwalking. My friend Steve and I drove in the smallest car I have ever been in South of Sydney to the Buttwangs. On the way, we stopped at this beautiful look-out above Wollongong, a city I visited the year before.
By the time we got near the Buttawangs, it was pretty dark so we camped at a place called Cave Beach. This is a small National Park known for its surf and the freindly kangaroos (or maybe they're wallabees). At night, without any moon, it was pretty difficult to find our way to the camping medaow, but what we found there was these two strange, white things over to the side of the meadow. We couldn't figure out what could be white without any light until we shined the flashlight on them and found that they were biolumenescent fungi. It was amazing--and eeiry. Here are two pictures of what they looked like. When we awoke in the morning we found that we were surrounded by kangaroos all around the meadow (around ten or fifteen). They didn't seem to mind us much since we were the only ones there and one was friendly enough to come right up to us for a scratch around the ears. That was amazing to me--being able to pet a semi-wild kangaroo! It surely must be a quintescential Australian experience. My new friend followed me around forthe morning, hopping clear across the meadow to sit next to me a few times. I can't wait to go back to visit him.
Here is a picture of Cave Beach in the morning. It is quite beautiful, though not as omonious as it was the night before:
None of my shots in the Buttswangs turned out, unfortunately, but it was an awesome, beautiful place none-the-less.
