Travel: Olympic Peninsula, Washington State

I had never been to the Olympic peninsula until this year (1996). It is a gorgeous area filled with many different terrains and views and few people.

OK, the spectacular Deception Pass isn't actually on the peninsula or near the Olympics, but it was on the way on our trip as we started from Anacortes.

The Olympic rainforest is small, but beautiful and interesting. I had never seen many of the trees and elements of a rainforest ecosystem before. In particular, the way trees sprout along the trunks of fallen trees. Here Rachel and Gaelen are being kind enough to pose for scale.

The shoreline along the coast is as beautiful as Big Sur. We camped along the coast and had picnics wherever it looked nice. The sunsets were spectacular and there is nothing better than taking a walk on the beach right before you go to sleep and hearing the surf all night long.
